What Is the Internet?

• The Internet is a network of networks. It consists of over 40,000 autonomous networks. When you connect to the Internet, your computer becomes part of this world-wide network of computers.
  
• On the Internet, you can exchange electronic mail, access and participate in discussion forums, search databases, transfer files, and so forth.

• The Internet is not a company. There is no single authority that controls the Internet. Each autonomous network on the Internet makes its own rules, regulations, and decisions about which resources to make publicly available.

• The Internet is continually re-invented by the people who participate on it.
